express feeling through type
the poems in question:
not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
is our destined end or way;
but to act, that each tomorrow
find us farther than today.
Let us, then, be up and doing,
with a heart for any fate;
still achieving, still pursuing,
learn to labor and to wait.

henry wadsworth longfellow / 1807–1882
the poems in question:
Whatever you do, you need courage. What-
ever course you decide upon, there is always
someone to tell you that you are wrong. There
are always difficulties arising that tempt you
to believe your critics are right. To map out
a course of action and follow it to an end re-
quires some of the same courage that a soldier
needs. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave
men and women to win them.

ralph waldo emerson / 1803–1882
